Weight Loss Pills
GP-LED ONLINE TREATMENTS ACROSS ENGLAND
Calleva Clinic plans to offer oral weight-loss treatment (weight loss "pills" or tablets), once we've confirmed reliable UK supply, as part of a GP-led online weight management service available to patients across England.
Consultations are by video and treatment is delivered discreetly to your door. Unlike an online pharmacy that dispatches medication after a questionnaire, every patient here is assessed and overseen by a team of qualified health professionals and treatment is only ever offered where it is clinically appropriate, following a full assessment.
What Are Weight Loss Pills?
"Weight loss pills" usually refers to a newer class of oral medicines called oral GLP-1 receptor agonists. They are the tablet form of the same type of medicine used in weight-loss injections. GLP-1 is a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite; these medicines mimic it, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing the urge to overeat.
In June 2026, the UK's medicines regulator (the MHRA) approved the first GLP-1 tablet for weight loss and weight management - an oral form of Semaglutide. It can be prescribed privately to adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27–30 with a weight-related health condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Pill or injection, what's the difference? The medicine works the same way; only the delivery differs. Tablets suit people who would rather avoid needles. Injections remain a well-established option. In your consultation we help you weigh up which route fits your circumstances, preferences and clinical picture.
Why Choose a GP-Led Service
OVER AN ONLINE PHARMACY?
Ordering weight-loss medication online is easy. Getting it prescribed safely, by a team who takes responsibility for your care, is not the same thing. Oral weight-loss medicines are powerful, prescription-only treatments. They are not suitable for everyone, and they work best inside proper clinical care — not as a product dispatched after a web form.
At Calleva Clinic:
A GP-Led Team Manage Your Care
Your suitability is assessed by a clinician, not decided by an automated questionnaire.
You're Cared For By a Named team
Behind the screen is a real, CQC-regulated clinic and identifiable clinicians - not an anonymous dispatch service. The same team supports you throughout: dosing, side-effect management, nutrition, and keeping muscle as you lose fat.
We Know When To Say No
A responsible service declines treatment where it isn't appropriate, and reviews you as you go. That clinical judgement is exactly what a questionnaire-and-dispatch pharmacy can't offer.
Convenient, But Properly Clinical
You get the convenience of a remote service - consultations from home, treatment to your door - without giving up the accountability of a GP-led clinic.
We're Honest About What We Are
we don't try to out-price the large online pharmacies. What we offer instead is medical weight management done properly, remotely, with a clinician accountable for your care.
Weight Loss Pill Eligibility
ORAL WEGOVY (SEMAGLUTIDE)
We may prescribe oral Wegovy alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to support weight loss and long-term weight management. These treatments are suitable for adults aged 18 to 85 who meet the following criteria:
A body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater (obesity) or:
A BMI of at least 27 kg/m² but less than 30 kg/m² (overweight) and weight-related health problems such as:
-
Pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes
-
High blood pressure
-
Abnormal levels of fats in the blood
-
Obstructive sleep apnoea
-
History of heart attack, stroke or blood vessel problems
Eligibility is confirmed only after a clinical assessment. Some people are not suitable for these medicines, and your clinician will discuss this openly with you.
How Does The Treatment Work?
Oral Wegovy (Semaglutide) is taken as a once-daily tablet. Treatment starts at a low dose and is increased in steps over several months, with a minimum period at each dose, to help your body adjust and to reduce side effects. Your team reviews you along the way.
The effect builds gradually: appetite tends to reduce in the early weeks, with steady, measurable weight change over the following months as the dose increases toward maintenance.
Already on a weekly injection? Patients currently treated privately with a weekly semaglutide injection can, in many cases, be transitioned to the daily tablet. If you're considering switching, book a review and we'll talk it through.
What The Evidence Shows
& WHAT TO REALISTICALLY EXPECT
In the main clinical trial of the oral semaglutide tablet, people who took it as prescribed alongside diet and activity changes lost, on average, around 16.6% of their body weight over about 15 months. When researchers counted everyone in the trial — including those who lowered their dose or stopped, the average was around 13.6%. About a third of those who stayed the course lost 20% or more.
Those are genuinely encouraging figures. But it's important to understand where they come from, because they were achieved under trial conditions and real life is different.
Why Your Results May Differ From The Headline Numbers
Trials Assume Near-Perfect Use
The 16.6% figure reflects people taking the medicine exactly as directed for the full period. In everyday life doses get missed, side effects interrupt treatment, and some people stop, which is why the trial's "real-world" figure was lower.
Trial Participants Had Close Support
Everyone in the study received structured diet and activity guidance. The medicine works with those changes, not instead of them - your own lifestyle changes make a real difference to your result.
The Trial Group Wasn't Everyone
Participants were mostly women, mostly without diabetes, and closely monitored. Your age, health conditions and circumstances may make your response different.
Side Effects Lead Some To Stop
Digestive symptoms, most often nausea, sometimes vomiting, are common early on and as the dose rises. They're usually mild to moderate and settle, but around 1 in 14 people in the trial stopped because of side effects.
Averages Hide a Wide Range
Some people lose a great deal; others lose little. An average is not a promise.
Weight Regain After Stopping
These medicines manage weight while you take them; they aren't a one-off cure.
What This Means For You
Rather than quote you a headline percentage, we'll give you a realistic, personalised picture at your assessment, based on your health, your starting point and what's achievable for you. And because your care is GP-led team with ongoing remote support, we're here to help you manage side effects and stay the course - the single biggest factor in getting closer to those trial results rather than falling short of them.
Side Effects and Safety
The most common side effects are mild-to-moderate digestive symptoms, nausea, or changes to digestion, usually most noticeable in the early weeks and as the dose increases. Serious side effects are less common. Because these are prescription medicines, they must be used under medical supervision, which is precisely why our GP-led model matters: your team helps you manage side effects and adjusts your plan rather than leaving you to cope alone. Remote care doesn't mean unsupported care, we offer free monthly video consultations.
Full information on risks and side effects is provided during your consultation and in the manufacturer's patient information leaflet.
What's Coming Next?
The field is moving quickly. A second oral GLP-1 medicine, Orforglipron, the first non-peptide oral GLP-1, taken without the food and timing restrictions of current tablets, has been approved in the United States and is currently under review by the UK's MHRA. It is not yet available in the UK. When new, appropriate treatments are approved for UK use, our clinical team assesses them and offers them where they add genuine value for patients.
